BARRINGTON – The Amherst Colts played one game over the weekend, losing 10-6 to the Ice Dogs during Nova Scotia Junior C Hockey League action in Barrington.
"We played with them the first period and the game was going well for both teams,” said Grove Sutton, Colts general manager. "We simply were a tired team and the Ice Dogs took advantage of it like good teams do.
“We broke down terribly in the second period and then woke up again in the third and out-scored them,” added Sutton. “With a full a squad this team will compete with anyone in this league.”
There was no scoring in the first and second period were loaded with goals.
Barrington took a 7-2 lead by the end of the second period with Harrison Van Meekeren scoring the first Colts goal off a pass from Andrew Barron, and Justin Farrow scoring the second Colts goal off passes from Cody Sutton and Gregor Dawe.
The Colts went goal for goal with the Ice Dogs in the third period, scoring four goals to the Ice Dogs three.
Barron scored the first goal of the period off assists from Geoff Phinney and Jesse MaGarvey. Farrow scored his second of the night off passes from MaGarvey and Dawe. Matthieu Beal scored off a feed from Farrow, and then Barron scored the final goal of the game off a pass from Farrow with 55 seconds left in the game.
"We dressed two new defencemen men this weekend, Harrison Van Meekeran and Mark Leblanc, and they both played like they have been playing all along,” said Sutton. “It was their first games of the year and both guys...looked great.”
The Colts had 11 penalties in the game, while the Dogs had 13.
Colts goaltenders Jesse Ogden and Mina Mathieu face 34 shots and 32 shots respectively, while their teammates had 34 shots on Ice Dogs.
“Although the weekend did not go as we wanted there was many positives, and one is the commitment we are getting from the guys that are with us day in day out,” said Colts coach Paul Atkinson.
The Colts are 4-9 on the season and the Dogs are the top team in the NSJCHL with an 11-2-1 record.
The Colts have two home games on tap next weekend, when they host the South Shore Wild both Saturday and Sunday at Amherst Stadium.
Saturday’s game is at 8 p.m. and Sunday’s is at 4 p.m.
