AMHERST – The Amherst Regional High School Vikettes soccer team advanced to the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation Division 2 regional championships after beating the Hants East Tigers 2-1 in overtime Tuesday afternoon at Amherst Regional High School.

Danielle Young scored the first Vikettes goal and Alex Hicks scored the winning goal.

“It felt pretty good to score,” said Hicks.

At about 10-minutes into the first overtime Hicks was to the left of the goal-face and 25 metres out when she scored the goal. She was surprised the ball went in.

“It wasn’t a sharp angle but the ball made a weird turn,” said Hicks. “I didn’t think it was going to go in.”

Hicks said it felt good to get the win.

“Everybody worked really hard.”

Her coach, Amanda Barlow, agrees.

“They came to play today and they played really well in the rainy weather,” said Barlow. “They played with heart.”

The Vikettes now travel to Northumberland on Thursday to compete in the regional championships.

To win the Division 2 regional title Barlow said, “They will have to play the exact same way (as they did Tuesday afternoon).”
