AMHERST – The Amherst Regional High School Vikings are undefeated in two games in Northern Nova Scotia High School Hockey League play.

MacKenzie Colford scored 2:18 into the first period and Evan MacKenzie and Connor Hoeg shared the shutout as the Vikings defeated the Northumberland Nighthawks 1-0 in Westville on Saturday.

Colford’s wrist shot went off the crossbar and into the net with Joel Boyle and Mitchell Speight adding assists.

On Friday, Alex VanSnick scored on a breakaway with 2:45 to play in overtime as the Vikings defeated the Nighthawks 3-2 at the Amherst Stadium.

VanSnick took a long pass from Andrew Skinner and broke in alone on Nighthawks' goalie Marshall MacNeil.

The goal came moments after the Vikings killed off a four-minute penalty incurred late in the third period.

Amherst opened the scoring early in the opening period when VanSnick stuffed home a rebound on the power play. Stephen Belyea picked up the lone assist on the goal.

The Nighthawks tied the game late in the second period when Colby Fraser managed to poke a lose puck by Vikings' goalie Connor Hoeg, who relieved Evan MacKenzie midway through the period.

The Vikings retook the lead with a minute to go in the period when Belyea carried the puck out from behind the net and slid it through MacNeil's legs with Ryan Hunter adding an assist.

Northumberland forced the overtime when Brett Connors scored 7:20 into the third period when his shot went between the arm and body of Hoeg.

Amherst had a lengthy five-on-three advantage later in the third period, but could not score. VanSnick came close to giving Amherst the lead when he banged one off the goalpost late in the power play.

Amherst is at a tournament at West Kings next weekend. They host the CEC Cougars from Truro Oct. 26 at 8:15 p.m.
