Mark and Brenda Carter display some of the prizes that are up for grabs this weekend at the 2012 Carter’s Sports Cresting Mixed Curling Bonspiel.
AMHERST – Usually playing the role of sponsor, Mark Carter, owner operator of Carter’s Sports Cresting, will also play the role of curler this weekend.
“There’s a youth team from Sackville who we’re playing in the first game, so we might smoked,” said Carter.
Carter hasn’t curled for the last couple years but will take part in the 2012 Carter’s Sports Cresting Mixed Curling Bonspiel beginning Friday at the Amherst Curling Club.
“Mark used to curl all the time,” said his wife Brenda. “He comes from a family of curlers. His grandfather’s name is up on some of the banners at the curling club. He was a really good curler.”
Carter's is sponsoring the tournament again this year, and 18 teams are participating in the bonspiel.
“We’re the sponsors but the people who do the hard work are volunteers like Peter Rushton and Janice Amos,” said Mark. “We write the cheque but they do the hard work and put in the hours.”
This year’s bonspiel features door prizes, a 50/50 draw and, on Friday night, free pizza and one free beer for the curlers, with the Steve Ridgeway Band providing entertainment.
There is a free continental breakfast Saturday morning with D.J. Dan and Karaoke providing entertainment Saturday night.
Prizes will be presented after play on Saturday.
