SPRINGHILL – The Amherst Regional High School Vikettes dominated the Cumberland Cup by outscoring their two opponents 179-75 yesterday in Springhill.
The Vikettes won the Championship game by grounding the SHS Golden Eagles 89-41.
Danielle Young led the Vikettes with 15 points, followed by Natasha Gouchie with 13, Paige Lewis with 11, Emily Pipes and Ashley MacEachern with eight each, Kathryn Hillier, Maitland Terrio, Leah Patterson, Jill Gould and Lauren MacEachern with six each, and Ashton Hunter with four.
“I thought we moved the ball well, our defence was good and we played for a full game,” said Vikettes coach Gillian Ellis after the game.
Brenna Casey had 12 points for the Eagles, followed by Sydnee Balser with nine, Steph McCormick with seven, Trish Thompson with six, Brittany Arsenault with four and Mallory Thompson with three.
“Their backsides just got handed to them,” said Eagles coach Charlie Chambers about his team after the loss. “We played a much better team and we played them like they were the dream team. Our kids looked scared playing them.
“We need all our players to contribute and that wasn’t the case today but Amherst is a great team and they shot at an extremely high percentage,” added Chambers.
The Vikettes made it into the final after defeating Oxford 90-34.
