NEW GLASGOW – On Saturday the North Nova Education Centre junior varsity basketball team won the regional tournament with wins over CEC and Northumberland Regional High School.
In the first game North Nova defeated CEC 82-69.
Scoring leaders were Devon Martell with 22, Billy Bowden and Justin Stewart both with 20 and Aaron Borden with nine.
In the second game against NRHS, the Gryphons won 91-37. Scoring leaders were Jonathan Hughes with 18, Kevin Camp with 15, Devon Martell (12) , Brad Saunders (11), Scott Kenney (8), Josh McKenna (7), Justin Stewart (6) and Coby Diamond (6) With these two wins, it means the boys will be hosting the provincial championship tournament this Friday and Saturday at North Nova.
Team manager John van Vulpen said the boys have had their ups and downs this season ending with a .500 win percentage. But at regionals they proved they could rise to the challenge before them.
“They knew they had something to play for,” van Vulpen said.
“We’ve got some guys that didn’t play a lot of ball before and some who didn’t play any ball before. Everyone has stepped up.”
The last time the Gryphons played in regionals was two years ago when it was hosted by Horton. This is the first time they have hosted the even though.
It will be good to play before a home crowd van Vulpen said.
But hosting is no easy challenge. With just days the school has had to do all the preparation that would go into any home tournament. They’ve had to line up referees, scorers, a canteen, speakers and more.
“You want it to be a little bit classier (than home tournaments),” van Vulpen said.
In their first game North Nova will play Citadel. They haven’t played them yet this year but know the team will be strong.
“That’s going to be a tough round,” he said.
Auburn also will be a battle to beat, but if the team plays the way they showed they could against CEC, van Vulpen is sure they’ll do well.
They’re hoping a large crowd will come out to cheer them on.
