SPRINGHILL - The Springhill High School Golden Eagles posted a pair of wins to capture an abbreviated version of the 19th annual Tournament of Hearts Saturday in Springhill.
The Golden Eagles got past Oxford Regional High School Golden Bears 77-71 in overtime and then won 64-52 over the Pugwash District High School Panthers to claim the round robin event.
Besides shortening the length of the tourney, Friday's snow storm also prevented New Germany High School from attending the tournament.
In the opener, Shauna Ryan's 12-footer with six seconds remaining in regulation knotted the score at 65-65 to force the extra session.
Brittany Barton poured in 28 points for SHS, with Ryan hooping 13. Kirsten Gogan had nine, Meagan Moore eight and Danika Beaton, Trish Thompson and Jill Casey managed four apiece. Taylor MacDonald added a hoop and Meagen Bowers a foul shot.
Erin Dorn struck for 24 for Oxford, behind 24-23 at halftime, while Madison Swan meshed 18.
Karli Boyd shot 19 points to lead Pugwash against Oxford in the second contest. Swan paced Oxford with 20 markers. Pugwash led 30-23 at the break.
The final game saw Barton shoot 16, Ryan 11 and Casey 10 to spark the Golden Eagles against Pugwash. Meagan Moore finished with nine, Thompson eight and Gogan and Emily Moore both managed four points. Beaton collected a solo hoop.
Boyd had a game-high 22 points for the Panthers.
Barton was chosen tourney MVP, while Ryan, Dorn, Boyd and Taylor White were selected all-stars.
"It was disappointing the weather came into play but the main thing is the teams each got a couple of good contests coming out of the exam break," SHS co-coach Charlie Chambers said after the tournament. "The county teams are excellent competition for each other and what a bonus in that there's little travel."
