From provincials and beyond
SPRINGHILL: "Citius, Altius, Fortius" or "Faster, Higher, Stronger" is the motto of the Olympic games.
At Springhill High School track and field the motto isn't nearly as fancy, they simply want to improve from one year to the next.
With up-and-comers like Grade 10 student Justin Capon that task should be easy.
Capon and the rest of his 4x100m relay team just missed making it to the Provincials last year and are hoping to go all the way this year.
"Last year we came in 3rd at the regionals and it was the top two teams who went to the provincials," Capon said. "We had better times this year already in the time trials."
Capon and the rest of his intermediate relay team have run the 4x100m in 56 seconds during practice runs.
"That was without our full team. We had somebody substituting for one of our runners," Capon said. "So I think we have a good chance of making it to the provincials."
Capon's relay teammates are Deepak Karivelil, Jose Torres and Kyle MacDonald.
SHS track coach Brad Moore thinks the 4x100m relay team is one of many bright spots on this year's track and field team,
"We have a lot of great competitors in both the intermediate and the junior level," track coach Brad Moore said. "We should put on a good show this year."
As opposed to the field, the track is where the action is at for SHS this year.
"Usually we are strong throwers, but this year we have a lot of kids who are running," Moore said.
Running is what Capon does best.
He says he loves track and field.
"It's a good work out and it's a good way to stay in shape," he said.
Capon competes in the 100m, 200m, long jump and javelin and sometimes in the longer distances.
"I like running the 100m best," Capon added. "I don't care so much for the 3000m or 5000m. I don't have the endurance."
Closed to 40 SHS athletes will travel to the District meet on May 23 and 24 in Oxford, then it's off to Truro on May 30 and 31. Thee following week, June 6 and 7, the provincial track meet will be held in Halifax.
