If the bylaw gets passed, these mobile restaurants could open in time for breakfast, have more than one operator on their license, operate off a bicycle and park their vehicles in additional spaces.

The Nomad Gourmet is a well-known fixture in Halifax's food truck community.

[HALIFAX, NS] - Halifax regional councillors have been served up the latest fare on food truck venders.

A bylaw was given first reading in council chambers Tuesday, proposing to open up the emerging mobile meal truck industry.

“It has been a long-time coming, but it is a very good report in terms of dealing with some of the concerns and consulting that has gone on in the community,” said councillor Jennifer Watts.

If it passes, these little restaurants could open in time for breakfast, have more than one operator on their license, operate off a bicycle and park their vehicles in additional spaces.

“We’ve opened up the opportunity for groups of venders to apply for a site together,” Chris Davis with Right of Way Services said outside of council. “Then they can work out their own rotation, where it might not have been viable for one truck to be there 24-hours a day, seven-days a week.”

Municipal staff and venders proposed five additional designated vendor locations which raised some concerns with councillors.

Councillor Russell Walker suggested the Kearney Lake Beach location be removed from the list, which passed.

“I was out there on the weekend, and it was a hot weekend,” said Walker leading up to the amendment. “The parking lot was full. Illegal parking is already an issue. I’d flag that.”

Four additional sites were proposed for Purdys Lane, DeWolf Park, the Dingle and Point Pleasant Park.
