Weak and petty accusations

The bogus accusation against Independent MP Bill Casey taken to the RCMP during the last federal election sounds like a witch hunt.
The federal representative for Cumberland-Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley learned recently of the attempt to smear him with an allegation of embezzlement from the Conservative Party, which he used to serve. Casey rose in the Commons last Tuesday to express his exasperation - having just learned of the charge - to assert that nothing wrong had been done and to ask the Speaker to investigate the smear on his character.
He learned of it through contact with a Montreal journalist. The Gazette had obtained documents referring to the allegation taken to Bible Hill RCMP by members of the Conservatives. The claim was that there had been a misappropriation of $30,000 in funds from the local riding association, transferred to a campaign fund account.
As political observers well know, Casey was ejected from caucus over his refusal to toe the line regarding changes to the Atlantic Accord. Following the ouster, Casey said, his staff ensured every cent of the money was appropriately returned to the riding association.
The RCMP report said there was not "sufficient cause or grounds" to launch an investigation.
That's not good enough, however, Casey is saying, where character assassination is concerned. He has said that it can still leave the impression that there was some cause or grounds.
Furthermore, the document he received on this is littered with whited-out names. He isn't even granted the privilege of knowing who his accusers are.
Top Tory brass deny having had any part in it: a means of retribution against a 'renegade,' as it were. As long as names are hidden, Casey - and the public - won't know.
There never was any indication of irregularities in the MP's dealing with this fund. The only conclusion is the allegation was made maliciously. Casey deserves to know names and to receive a retraction and apology.
