To the editor,
While anything which is of a derogatory nature toward the present government sends columnist Tim Harper into realms of pure delight, his enthusiastic endorsement of Neil Young's rant needs a second look.
Neil Young has not "done his homework" as Mr. Harper states, nor indeed has Mr. Harper. Were it so he would have known that the claims of severe health problems among residents of Forts 'Mac' and 'Chip' were falsely made, and the doctor who made them was censured by his peers in the Alberta Medical Association when he failed to co-operate with the Society by refusing to supply patient records to substantiate his diagnoses and claims of high prevalence, and rare forms of cancer.
Evidence of reclamation of sites of mined oil sands is readily visible. What valid reason is there for claiming that none is occurring?
The treaties which ceded lands where the oil sands are being developed were concluded well over a century ago... their language is simple and straightforward. Neither Young nor Harper state the manner in which they claim the government is not fulfilling its treaty obligations, to the detriment of the aboriginal peoples.
