Despite the 'I'm flattered-but-no-thanks' response by Central Nova MP?Peter MacKay, the?rumour that he is a possible candidate for NATO?secretary?general won't go away. And, until outgoing Danish?Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen actually assumes the role - as it's likely he will - the safest thing to say is that nothing will be as it appears.
There is no open?process for selecting the civilian?leader of the treaty?organization. Generally, picking a new one involves member states reaching a consensus. It's a very quiet process with?little lobbying and zero electioneering - one?where MacKay is said to be an undeclared contender.
It's become much a?much?more public story since reports indicated U.S. vice-president Joe Biden was lending MacKay his moral support. Elsewhere, through the grapevine, it's been said Prime Minister Stephen?Harper would also?support MacKay's nomination.
It would be very easy for MacKay to politely dismiss the notion that he wants this job. If there were a kernel of truth?among the dozens of articles saying so, it's quite?natural to assume that's exactly what he's doing.
In Brussels yesterday, MacKay told reporters that he was more interested?in keeping his current job as minister of National Defence and that was his focus.
"I have a tremendous amount of work to do with the Canadian Forces," he said.
That he does, without question. Along with minding his constituents, that's exactly what he was elected to do. With the current government's focus on rebuilding our military - and the ongoing struggles in Afghanistan (and elsewhere), the Department of National Defence requires?a committed leader.
We would ask for some indication should the department suddenly have to switch?gears and?welcome a new minister - but we realize that's just not how things work in high-level posts?like the one MacKay may or may not be vying for.
It is absolutely impossible to prognosticate in the presence of a Canadian?politician?these days, so we must keep our?eyes peeled to the horizon
