When Cumberland North MLA Ernest Fage said earlier this week that his constituents have been supportive of his decision to remain in the legislature as an independent Conservative it shouldnt have come as much of a surprise because the veteran MLA and former cabinet minister still remains popular in his riding.

When Cumberland North MLA Ernest Fage said earlier this week that his constituents have been supportive of his decision to remain in the legislature as an independent Conservative it shouldnt have come as much of a surprise because the veteran MLA and former cabinet minister still remains popular in his riding.

Many people have written Fages political obituary since he voluntarily resigned as human resources minister in January after media reports of a November car accident in which he left without exchanging insurance information with the other driver.

Last year, following his resignation as economic development minister in the days after Potatogate, many figured Fages political future had been sealed. However, instead of turfing him from office, the voters of Cumberland North returned him to Halifax by an even bigger margin.

Fage did the right thing by leaving cabinet and he was correct in leaving the government caucus. That doesnt mean he should resign as an MLA. First of all, while charged with leaving the scene of an accident, he hasnt been convicted. We live in a society in which people are innocent until proven guilty, no matter what the court of public opinion or what the media says.

Who knows how this latest controversy will impact Fage politically. We probably wont know until after his case winds its way through the court. While sitting as an independent is likely going to be difficult, Fage firmly believes he can represent his riding by sitting in the legislature.

Fage has done a lot for Cumberland North as a member of cabinet and as a backbencher in the months following his first departure from the executive council. Theres no reason to believe hell be any less effective as an independent Conservative MLA than he would be as a regular MLA.
