Date change for prom not all bad

A decision by administrators at Springhill High School to change the senior prom from its traditional night during graduation week to early June has raised the ire of some parents and students in the community.

A decision by administrators at Springhill High School to change the senior prom from its traditional night during graduation week to early June has raised the ire of some parents and students in the community.

The school argues that it made the change in the best interests of the students, citing an extraordinarily busy time at the end of the month. The schools principal, Karla Mitchell-Smith, said the change would alleviate a great deal of stress for grads.

She added that by moving the date, officials hope to help students to be better focused for their exams.

The argument does have some merit although it would be tough to prove just how many students lose their focus over preparing for prom.

The naysayers, however, contend that prom night ought to be held at its regular time of year (at least regular by most Nova Scotia standards - many high schools in other parts of the continent hold prom earlier in the spring).

They see the prom as a kind of signal that the high school experience is over. That they are not going to see their friends in class the next day or spend the next two weeks writing final exams.

The Springhill students also argue that there are too many other activities going on at the same time - activities such as track meets and other end of year events.

In the end, the school is probably making the right decision, but it would be well advised to take into account the students concerns about competing activities when setting the actual date. And officials should not expect attendance to be too high the next day. No matter what date it is held, to the kids prom night is prom night and many wont likely be sitting in their assigned seats at Springhill High the next day.
