I weighed myself this week. The scale said 215.4 pounds. Last week it said 216 pounds.

I’ve never been heavier or fatter.

I know, I know. Some of the 500-pounders out there are scoffing. I admit, I’m just fat, not “bury me in a piano box” big. But the trend isn’t good. At 5’8, my body mass index (BMI) number is 33, which gives me the title ‘obese’. I need to lose 20 pounds just to get down to the overweight category.

The funny thing is, I know how to diet and exercise. I was a certified personal trainer. I was a senior editor at Oxygen magazine. I had an op-ed about weight-loss published in Canada’s biggest newspaper.

I should know better.

The trouble is, cinnamon buns taste really good. So does carrot cake. And donuts, and pizza and banana bread. Did I mention donuts?

You can have all the knowledge in the world, but if you’re not motivated, nothing will happen. Yes, that’s the secret. Not low-carb/high protein. Not low-glycemic index. Not grapefruit morning, noon and night. Motivation. The desire to do what you already know you should do. That’s what I’ve lacked.

So I’m going public.

I’m going to lose weight. And I’m going to write about it every week for the newspaper.

Forty pounds by Thanksgiving, that’s the goal. I’ll have a BMI of 27, which is at the low end of overweight.

How will I do it? Well, I’ll reveal more details as the weeks unfold. But diet and exercise pretty much cover it. Calorie counting and getting my heart rate up.

Calorie counting and healthy eating are two different things, mind you. Sometimes this dieter needs a candy bar…or two.
