Greetings from Brookdale.
The leaves are changing fast and the colours are really brilliant especially the reds. It was nice and warm today, lets hope it stays for a while.
We had a combined service on Sunday at Fenwick United and on the drive there, I saw literally hundreds of the little black birds lining the hydro wires at the junction of Fenwick Road and Porter Road. There are generally a good many on Church Street, going into town, but there was no comparison to the ones in Fenwick. Maybe they like the view better, as you can see right out across the marsh to Chignecto Bay.
Brookdale, Fenwick and Nappan/Maccan joined together to celebrate the new McCully Pastoral Charge and it was a lovely celebration. It was spiritual, musical (a full choir), communion was held and we all had fun. The clowns were a special treat. We had Beeper from Truro, Rosie from Sackville and our own special clown, Smiley, from Fenwick. We had a good many folk out but there was room for more. I think I am related to a good many of these folk through the Read, Smith, Ripley and Shipley families for starters.
Pam Bowman will be taking photos of all members of the three congregations so that we will have a directory and everyone can put a name to those we do not recognize. The older one gets, the harder it is to remember names.
Brookdale United will hold regular services at 9:30 am starting again this coming Sunday, September 27. World Wide Communion will be held on Oct. 4. If you like to get up early, please come and join with us. If you like to sing, we have a choir. All welcome.
Mark your calendar for the 85th Brookdale Anniversary Service for 7 p.m. on November 8. This will be the only service that day.
On Saturday, October 10 the Brookdale Community Hall will be holding a fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Hall committee will have a Bake Table, the Double D 4 H Club will have a table with baking and crafts and a raffle and there will be other tables with jams, pickles, flower arrangements and other items. There will be something for everyone, seven tables in all.
Congratulations is extended to the Grade 6 students and their teachers at the Cumberland North Academy for doing the Yellow Ribbon Campaign for our troops in Afghanistan. The C.N.A also promotes S.O.L.E.- Self - Others - Learning - Environment.
The first Ovarian Cancer walk of Hope had about 80 participants and they raised over $ 3,000 this past Sunday. It would be beneficial to the Walk if they had a good sponsor. Evelyn Rushton and her crew did a great job for the first time around.
The Chignecto Presbyterial UCW Retreat was well attended and a few brave souls went wading at lunchtime. I definitely was not one of them. It was a cold day and there was a high northwester blowing. The Theme for the day was "Who Do You Say You Are." We had to think of a person who we admired and list as many reason as possible why we did. I chose Janet Gunn and came up with a dozen reasons in no time. She is one special lady. Some of us decided that health and age were two big factors that limit us considerably in what we do and what we want to do. The UCW members at Salisbury were the sponsors and they made delicious Blueberry and Cranberry muffins, coffee was good too. The second issue of the UCW N.E.W.S. was distributed. All those who purchased one should have them by the end of this week.
Fenwick United Church will hold a Turkey Supper on Sept. 26 from 4 to 6 p.m. Adults $12 , Children 12 and under $5. and children under five are free. Take-outs are available.
Something to think about … The Senate Special Committee on Aging has released May 2009 its final study of recommendations for elder care in Canada. Senator Wilbert Keon and Senator Sharon Carstairs have recommended several changes for the care sector. This report has been a long time coming. I attended a Palliative Care AGM about five years ago and Senator Carstairs was there and spoke to us at lunchtime. Now we have to find a copy of the report and see how many recommendations will be approved.
Weekly quote: Today is the tomorrow that you looked forward to yesterday. The same applies to those that worry about tomorrow and most of the time when tomorrow comes you wasted a good day worrying about nothing.
Have a blessed and happy week.
