Greetings from Brookdale.
Our spring is still very chilly at times and we have had a fair amount of rain and very little sun. There is always hope.
The Highland Fling is over for another year. Saturday was a very busy day and we truly thank all those who worked so hard in making their booths a success and we sincerely thank all those who came out in support. It was one of the best Highland Flings that we have had for awhile. The sun was even out for a few hours. The list of winners will be in next week's paper and there will be a list either at the hospital gift shop or at the information desk at the main entrance at the hospital. Brookdale came up lucky with a few winners this year and I was one of them. I won the afghan that Aleita Rawdings made for us especially for the Highland Fling. Helen Smith made them for us for many years and, after she passed away, Leita did the honours. Leita has now passed away, so we will be looking for a replacement. I have two or three started, but I seem to be better at the baby afghans.
The Cumberland Pastoral Charge held their last official board meeting on Monday night at the Trinity United Church Hall in River Hebert. All four churches were represented. As of June 30, the Cumberland Pastoral Charge will cease to be. Immanuel United will become a part of the Northumberland Pastoral Charge but Brookdale, Joggins and River Hebert are still to be decided. There will be a very important meeting on May 25 at 7 p.m. at the Nappan/Maccan United Church for the congregations of Brookdale United Church, Fenwick United Church, Joggins United Church, (Trinity) River Hebert United Church and Nappan/Maccan United Church. It is hoped that as many as possible from these congregations will be out to this meeting.
I hope that all mothers enjoyed their special day. The United Church likes to call it Christian Family Day, but it was set up as Mother's Day and should be celebrated as such. We had Christine MacLeod as our supply minister and it was a lovely service. She introduced her "Mom" to us with the help of her daughter, Machaela.
The Little Fiddlers will be at Immanuel United in Amherst on May 24 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. with a light lunch to follow. Tickets are $5 and are available from Lilly at 667-2623 and Mary at 667-6164.
Bill Drysdale will be recognized as a designated lay minister at the Maritime Conference Annual Meeting on Sunday, May 31 at the closing worship service at 11 a.m. at the Veteran's Memorial Civic Centre in Sackville, N.B. Maritime Conference starts on May 28 and closes with the Celebration of Ministry Service. I was a member of Bill's discernment committee when he decided to go in to Ministry of the United Church.
The Cumberland Pastoral Charge "Spirit of Cumberland Newsletter" will be published for the last time. Shelley would like all items sent in to her as soon as possible or, at the latest, no later than May 20.
The Little Fiddlers will be at Immanuel Church on May 24 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 and a light lunch will follow. Contact Lilly Wessell at 667-2623 or Mary Dunlop at 667-6164.
Nurses Idol was a great hit again this year. It was held at the Amherst Regional High School with a sold out crowd. Many of us who set up the Highland Fling have to miss it. It would be great to have it taped for those unable to go. I'm sure this would be a good fundraiser as well.
Congratulations are extended to Kendra Kinnear, who was honoured with her Pathfinders 10-year pin in Halifax on the weekend. We were pleased to have the Girl Guide Association back with a booth at the Highland Fling this year with the pop ring toss.
The Cumberland County Hospice Palliative Care Society will be sending out receipts very shortly as the lists for those who donated to the curling benefit have been received except for one. This event raised over $10,000.
The Cumberland County Museum will hold its plant sale on Saturday, May 16 at the museum. If you have any plants to donate, try to drop them off on Friday.
