Chignecto UCW to hold annual camp retreat

Greetings from Brookdale.

August is gone but what a weekend. I think we had more rain than we have had all summer. Our corn is almost flat to the ground. We need some sun now to dry up the gardens or everything will be lost.

The museums Garden Party at the Museum with the Lt. Gov, Mayann Francis, turned out lovely and it was great to see so many in attendance. It was a lovely day except for the mosquitoes and hornets otherwise it was very enjoyable. There was lots of food and helpers, especially with the Girl Guides serving.

I had the pleasure of chatting with Marjorie Martin, one of our Highland Fling supporters, who told me she had celebrated her 90th birthday on June 26. She is an amazing lady and I hope and pray she has many more.

The United Church Women of Chignecto Presbyterial will be holding its annual Camp Ta-Wa-Si Retreat at Johnsons Point on Saturday, Sept. 20 with registration at 9:30 a.m. Registrar is Mrs. Mary Draper, 38 Muncey Drive, Riverview, N.B., E1B 3N1.

Brookdale United Church will open on Sept. 7. We generally start our service at 11:15 a.m. but the paper said 11 a.m. so just come for 11 and if it is later, we can have a meet and greet time, a time to chat and catch up on the summer news.

The Highland Fling Draw for the Gift from the Amherst Wandlyn Inn will be drawn on Sept. 15 at the CRHCC. The winner will receive one night free in the bridal suite, Breakfast for two and a nice gift basket. Tickets are $2 each or three for $5. Tickets are available at the auxiliary gift shop or by calling me at 667-8107. Time is running out.

The Cumberland Health Care Auxiliary will meet on Sept. 11 at the CRHCC in the board room at 7:30 p.m. All members who have tickets for sale on the draw are asked to turn in the stubs and money at this meeting for the draw on Monday, Sept. 15.

The Nova Scotia Association Health Auxiliaries will hold their AGM at Liscombe Lodge near Guysborough on Oct. 2, 3 and 4. Hopefully the weatherman will give us a good weekend as that will be a good autumn drive and the trees will have changed colour. I noticed that some of the trees on the Tyndal Road have started already.

The Cumberland Pastoral Charge is supposed to have a meeting in September but Im not sure when so check your bulletin. We will be having the Rev. Lloyd Bruce until the end of the year. A meeting has been set up by Chignecto Presbyterial to meet with all the United Churches in Cumberland County. More on this later.

Plans are underway for the third annual Cumberland County Hospice Palliative Care Society Appreciation Tea. Invitations will be sent out once plans are completed.

A little late news. John and Pauline Kellegrew are grandparents. Their daughter, Brenda, and husband Kirk Roux had a baby boy in July. Congratulations and best wishes to them all.

Chris and his fiancée, Sandra Falbo arrived in from Oakville, Ont. They did some sight seeing in Parrsboro one day and the three of us were down to Pugwash another day.

We spent our time here at the house instead of the cottage this year. I managed about two weekends only this summer. Blueberries were at their peak so we did some down in the freezer and Chris and Sandra took several boxes back with them.

Erla and Gerald Gouchies daughter and her family, Corrine and Brad Stephenson from Maple Ridge, B.C. and two sons, ages 13 and 11 had a great time visiting. They now have friends visiting from Tillsonburg, Ontario - the place made famous by Stomping Tom.

My dad, Donald Hugh Fraser, passed away on Sept. 1, 1987 following his 80th birthday. We had a birthday celebration for him at the Fort Cumberland Manor on March 2. He was able to meet and greet many of his family and friends. It was a good time for him and for those who shared in the celebration. We did not expect him to be gone by September but he was ready and for that we are thankful and we shall always remember him.

Time to close so have a good week.
