Well written Marlene! I particularly like the fact that you are willing to attach your name to your opinion. It is unfortunate that anyone can comment on an article here using an alias. If you don't have the integrity to stand behind your beliefs, why negatively comment on someone who does? Our community rinks have a history behind them that cannot be replaced with a new building. I would assume that the individual who called them decrepid is also in favor of feeding our veterans and elderly frozen meals as well. After all they are old too.

Thanks for your comment. I agree with you that people should be required to use their real names, but how can you 'police' that? Thanks for using your real name! :)

I couldn't agree more and couldn't have said it better myself. I am a mom of 2 boys and I do not have a vehicle at my full access to get my boys anywhere. My oldest son wants to do Hockey this year and we live in Trenton. Now granted we have a rink, at least for the time being. But I know financially Trenton is in trouble, so it is only a matter of time before our rink is gone too. Then what will I do? What will my son do? I am having a hard time finding work so money is an issue. I am just lucky to have amazing parents who help me out if and when they can. But in all honesty, I have not been to the wellness center, nor do I plan on going. Word of mouth matters a lot and all I have heard is nothing but negative stories about different experiences at the wellness center. Yes it is great that we have a state of the art facility, but in all this planning, why the hell did no one think of the little people and the fact of not being able to get there? I think if we were going to invest all that much money in something, then why not make it transportation and get the buses back up and running, so then people can actually live comfortably and not be broke because we have to take cabs everywhere. I know myself as well as many other people would much rather be in debt for something everyone could use, not just what seems to be the upper and middle class citizens!!!

Does anyone remember when the white knight from Ottawa arrived with cheque hand? Can anyone remember when the Sobey empire came forward with a parcel of land that they were trying to sluff off for ages? It was donated for a hefty tax write off. Does anyone remember when the movers and shakers were lining up to po po the idea that this Taj Mathal would be too expensive for the economically challenged county to not only pay for but maintain into the future? Well I sure do, and as another commenter wrote where are "The Pictou County elite, who were all smiles in the paper presenting their cheques for this project, they are quite silent now! Not only silent my friend but invisible as well, probably huddled in some dark room conjuring up some other massive outlay of other peoples money. How about a nice large zoo with all kinds of exotic animals, they would feel right at home rubbing shoulders with the elite. To be truthful it would be hard to tell one from the other.

It should not be a surprise to anyone that the other rinks in the county would have to close or that there is a deficit for this place in the first year or two. My support for this was dependant on these closures. The whole intent of the Wellness Center investment was to inject money in to the regions to provide state of the art, energy efficient facilities to replace decrepid buildings that are close to being condemned. You also seem to have some pretty strong words against Harper and Peter MacKay that seem a bit off topic and self-serving. Dont go if you dont like it.

Apparently you missed the part about not being able to pay the utility bills. Could this be converted to Natural Gas in the future to lower costs?

Next time, try to write your letter regarding a municipal issue without mentioning your bias view of the federal government half a dozen times.

I dont know of one of these facilities which ase selfsustaining. There seems to be a considerable lack of planning by all those involved. There is such a lack of universality with this project. Ms wells mentions amalgamation in her writings and this would work as well as the big building on Mac gregor Avenue. You can have coperation without capitualtion. We have ten provinces and two territories and confederation, which up to the last few years has been working well. We have in Pictou County a number of different entities with different needs and systems in place, which on their own may not be a 100% but if it becomes on entity it may be a disaster for years to come. There would have to be changes in the municipal government Act before I would ever give my support to amalgamation. That being an opting out clause. The shared Services Agreement between New Glasgow and Westville is a prime example of what not to do. There has to be transparencey, and not the kind Mr Harper is conducting in Ottawa. If there is any sort or working agreement between the various municipal units it should be done on a piece by piece basis with reviews by each unit.
