Taxpayers deserve to see all expenses reported

To the editor,

I am disturbed to read of the MLA expenditure reports. Legislature members from all sides need to explain their actions. I am pleased some have, angry that some have not.

Accountability of tax dollars should not be just limited to politicians. The entire civil service at the municipal, provincial and federal levels should be making their expense accounts completely open.

It was recently announced in Ontario that certain high-ranking civil servants will be required to post their expense accounts down to the penny.

Since my day job is as a member of the Ontario civil service, I felt that this step should be extended further and all civil servants should have their expenses posted. Although I do not travel often for my job, I made a personal pledge a long time ago to take taxpayers into consideration when I have travelled. For instance, I have stayed in hotels where continental breakfasts are served every single morning. Therefore a breakfast meal expense is saved. I would also never fly first class on the government dime.

I have since said that if I ever have to travel again on government business, I will post a detailed expense account on my personal website. Scanning a few receipts and an expense report does not take long.

Taxpayers deserve nothing less.
