Item: Summerside Western Capitals win Fred Page Cup. Congrats to them, they obviously deserved it.
I'll say however, that the Capitals' attempt at hosting two FPC games on the Island last week (Moncton was the designated host for the 2009 tournament) was an embarrassment. What, are we going to change tournament rules whenever we feel like it?
Hockey New Brunswick wisely stepped in and ruled that all games of the Eastern Canada championship would take place in Moncton, but only after it looked like the Pembroke Lumber Kings might have to play a tournament game in Summerside against the Capitals, giving the Caps a home ice advantage they would not have deserved. It was a bush league ploy.
Item: After the Calgary Flames were eliminated by the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday, some of the talking heads at a Canadian all-sports network were wringing their hands and calling for someone (or everyone) to get fired, or for the Flames' roster to be dismantled. They stopped just short of demanding the Rink-Formerly-Known-as-the-Saddledome be dynamited.
Do they not understand that when your defencemen either can't play at all or are seriously banged up (some with ribs, another with a foot problem and another with not one but two hand injuries), your odds of winning a playoff series are quite long? It's not very complicated. The young and talented 'Hawks probably won't beat Vancouver, but they'll be dangerous in the future.
Item: The Montreal Canadiens were completely out-classed by the Boston Bruins. The Habs had too many small, non-physical players who don't score enough and don't have the stomach for playoff wars. There were not enough Canadians on the Canadiens, in other words.
Item: Carl Edwards literally jogs over the finish line after a spectacular final-lap crash at Talladega, and finishes 24th. I didn't realize they could finish a race like that after a crash; it must have been a rule concocted by NASCAR officials one night when they were swilling some good 'shine and having a pig roast on the back 40. It's kind of stupid if you ask me and I can't wait to hear the explanation from Annie Mae on this one.
Edwards also blasted NASCAR for restrictor plate racing (still don't know what that is, still not making any real attempt to find out) being dangerous because cars get bunched up all day, which he says can lead to accidents, and I suppose he would know. And by the way, isn't that what half the people want when they watch the left-turnin' - crashes and car parts flyin' everywhere, muscleshirt-wearing fans getting teeth knocked out by the debris? Just asking.

Wait, the Flames get a pass because of injuries yet the Habs were missing Markov (Best Dman and this year's MVP) Schneider (He reinvented their PP), Brisbois (Can hit the net from the point), Tanguay (Scorer with playoff experience), and Lang (Best offensive center) but they were outclassed?

    Yeeeeeeeeah.
