Birthday surprises continue for 90-year old Amherst veteran

On Feb. 21, Earl Gouchie of Amherst will celebrate his 90th birthday, for the second time, as last July at the Canadian Legion Branch 10 about 200 family members and friends surprised him with President Charlie picked him up at his home supposedly to help him do something else.

SPRINGHILL On Feb. 21, Earl Gouchie of Amherst will celebrate his 90th birthday, for the second time, as last July at the Canadian Legion Branch 10 about 200 family members and friends surprised him with President Charlie picked him up at his home supposedly to help him do something else. What a surprise to see so many of his family from in and out of town. Daughter Earlene arranged to have this party when most of his family, all but one, could be present. Son Jackie from Edmonton will arrive on the 19th for the big day with dad. Earl, a well known veteran, never shows his age, and is always willing when asked to help out. He and his late wife Kay had four sons: Pat in Alberta; Donny and Jackie in Edmonton, and Darrell is deceased; and three daughters: Earlene and Karen in Amherst and Caroline in Hamilton, Ont.

In July a bountiful lunch of sandwiches, meat and cheese trays were served with various beverages. A special decorated cake was presented to Earl from Dorothy Goodwin, made by her daughter Dawn Thompson, RN. It was a large flat cake decorated with a picture of a hunters cabin, a dear, a 4-wheeler and trees along a path.

Many pictures were taken, and there was music and a lot of reminiscing with many grandchildren, great and great-grandchildren and many of Earls friends.

I am sure that on the 21st he will be celebrating his great age with some family and friends.

On Feb. 28, Maynard and Marg (McMillan) Bickerton of Peachland, B.C., will celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary. Both were born in Springhill.

To Bill Gilroy of Amherst, its never too late to send a belated 94th birthday wish to you, and to Paula Cormier on Feb. 16; and to Bucky Gouchie on Feb. 15. On Feb. 27, twin sister and brother, Doris MacDonald and Robert LeBlanc will be 87; on Feb. 27, their sister Dorilla Dunlop will be 39 plus, Liz Martin in Springhill will celebrate her special day, and also the OReilly Twins, Carrigan and Lauren, who will be having their seventh birthday party up here in Amherst at the YMCA on Sunday with many family members and friends. They are the daughters of Dave OReilly. Cathy Ward and Granny Marilyn Ward enjoyed their party and I had pieces of their cakes. Thanks! Happy birthday wishes to Helen Goodwin and Myrna McNair on March 2 and on March 3 to Margie Kempt and Dan MacDonald in Springhill and Fred Farrow, here in Amherst.

My condolences to families of Fed Melanson of Amherst and also to the family of Ken Gilles of Ontario, who is a cousin of mine.

I had a few phone calls to ask me to let people in Springhill and Amherst know our Canadian flag can be bought in two places in Springhill; and it is on display several places in Amherst. Karl Schaschl, our neighbour, raises and lowers the Canadian flag every day, as others do.

I received this last minute call about omitting the All Saints Anglican Church last week, when I named the Springhill churches in 1899.
