Highland Fling finds a new home for special 25th year

Greetings from Brookdale.

We continue to have bitter cold and sunny days.

BROOKDALE Greetings from Brookdale.

We continue to have bitter cold and sunny days. This morning it is -16, on Sunday morning it was - 20. Definitely not my kind of weather. I see by the weather forecast that we are due for snow on Friday and Saturday.

The annual reports of the Cumberland Pastoral Charge were given out at church on Sunday to be dealt with at the official board meeting in Joggins on Feb. 20 as it stands now.

In our bulletins on Sunday, our secretary Shelley, inserted a yellow information sheet.

She is updating the church files and needs names, addresses, special celebration dates, phone numbers, e-mail addresses if you have one and any other info that you wish to give. Especially if you would like birthday and anniversaries put in the bulletin or not.

I saw a report in the paper regarding a rumble strip to be made on the left side of the highways. This is an excellent idea. Quebec has it on Highway 20 and I especially appreciated two years ago when we were coming home from Ontario. We drove into a blizzard or white out and the only way I could tell I was still on the road was by the rumble strip. It was a living nightmare but between my prayers and the rumble strip, we made it.

We have a new venue for the Highland Fling this year.

We will be using the Amherst Curling Club as the stadium will be under repairs. They will be starting the second phase that includes the removal and replacement of the concrete slab, cooling system and arena boards.

This year we will be celebrating the 25th Highland Fling and hopefully we will be able to have a celebration in the fall to recognize all those who have supported the Highland Fling over the years.

Funds raised from this event have allowed the auxiliary to purchase many, many pieces of equipment for the old hospital and the new hospital.

The Highland Fling is the only community fundraiser that the auxiliary does now. Letters will be going out soon.

The annual meeting of the Cumberland Health Care Auxiliary will be held on March 8, 7:30 p.m. at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre in Boardroom 1 and 2.

Just a health note: I was reading an article on Type 11 diabetes in the 50 Plus magazine and it stated that 50 years ago 90 per cent of diabetes was due to bad genetics (type 1) and 10 per cent was due to obesity (type 11).

The stats today are not good. For the first time in two centuries, North American children may have shorter life expectancies than their parents.

This is due mainly to the growing epidemic of childhood obesity. Type 11 diabetes is a big health risk as there are so many side effects. It runs in my Dads family so we have to be extremely careful.

Thats it for today.

Some thoughts

Laughter is a tranquilizer with no side effects.

Happiness is never stopping to think if you are.

A happy marriage is the worlds best bargain.

Blessings .
