Mount Allison has set its schedule for the rest of the academic year.

SACKVILLE, N.B. – Mount Allison University has decided against extending the school year as it sets its schedule to complete the academic term.

The university Senate held a special meeting on Wednesday to determine the schedule after a three-week strike ended with the resumption of classes on Monday.

The university presented the Senate, a body made up of faculty, students, and administrators, with two options for the completion of the term.

A third option was presented to Senate that blended elements of the proposals presented by the university.

The Senate opted to preserve the week of independent study as planned, from Feb. 22 to Mar. 1, move the last day of classes from Tuesday, Apr. 8 to Friday, Apr. 11 and move the start of the exam period from Saturday, Apr. 12 to Monday, Apr. 14

The term will not be extended. The last day of exams remains Apr. 24. Exams will take place as usual with three-hour exams and three exam slots per day. A new exam schedule will be formulated and released to students on March 5.

“I am pleased that there is now some clarity as to how the academic term will be completed,” says Karen Grant, Mount Allison’s provost and vice-president academic and research. 

Grant said the university felt it was important to retain the week of independent study. 


“A significant number of our students are involved in activities over the week of independent study that either earn them experiential learning credits or that support leadership development through groups like Global Brigades or Habitat for Humanity,” Grant said. “Many students also have personal and family commitments that are not easily re-arranged. Retaining the week of independent study also gives faculty time to make the necessary changes to their course outlines so they are able to maintain the academic quality of their classes.”
