Will Christmas 2013 be white and snowy?

Environment Canada's seven day weather forecast is now starting to suggest if the Southwest will have a White Christmas.

Since the weather forecast covers the next seven days, you can get the forecast for Christmas Day starting on December 18.

For those who can't wait, Environment Canada has analyzed 57 years of weather records for 39 major centres across Canada, and calculated the probability of having a white snow-covered Christmas Day.

The following data measures the amount of snowfall recorded for major cities across Canada from 1955-2011. From this, a probability can be made to determine if a white Christmas will occur for the current year.

Regina - 90 per cent chance (Now 1992-2011); 91 per cent chance (1955-2011); 90 per cent chance (before 1963-1982); Perfect Christmas 38 (1955-2007); Snowdepth Now 12 (Now 1992-2011); Snowdepth Before 14 (1963-2982)

Saskatoon - 80 per cent chance (Now 1992-2011); 93 per cent chance (1955-2011); 100 per cent chance (before 1963-1982); Perfect Christmas 33 (1955-2007); Snowdepth Now 9 (Now 1992-2011); Snowdepth Before 13 (1963-2982)

Calgary - 50 per cent chance (Now 1992-2011); 56 per cent chance (1955-2011); 75 per cent chance (before 1963-1982); Perfect Christmas 4 (1955-2007); Snowdepth Now 4 (Now 1992-2011); Snowdepth Before 6 (1963-2982)

Medicine Hat - 45 per cent chance (Now 1992-2011); 56 per cent chance (1955-2011); 75 per cent chance (before 1963-1982); Perfect Christmas 33 (1955-2007); Snowdepth Now 5 (Now 1992-2011); Snowdepth Before 7 (1963-2982)

Brandon - 90 per cent chance (Now 1992-2011); 93 per cent chance (1955-2011); 95 per cent chance (before 1963-1982); Perfect Christmas 28 (1955-2007); Snowdepth Now 19 (Now 1992-2011); Snowdepth Before 9 (1963-2982).

The per cent chance of a White Christmas is based on the probability of two centimetres of snow cover or more on Christmas morning (measured over a 57 year period).

A Perfect Christmas is defined as a white Christmas morning and snow in the air on Christmas Day.
