The Cypress Health Region has received the results of its recent six-day accreditation survey and are pleased with Accreditation Canada’s decision to award the region with an accredited status. This award acknowledges the region’s ongoing commitment to the provision of a high level of quality improvement and safety.

Eight Accreditation Canada surveyors from across the country visited the health region from October 6-11, and they conducted a peer review of the region’s processes and practices in comparison to national standards of health care excellence. In total there were approximately 2,472 standards that the region was compared against. The survey results provided Cypress Health with an overall achievement rating of 95 per cent compliance with highest ratings noted in worklife balance (98 per cent), making the best use of available resources (97 per cent), and patient family centred care (97 per cent).

In addition to the high compliance ranking, the surveyors also noted a number of leading or best practices that Cypress Health has incorporated. The region’s successful management of change through projects such as the Southwest Integrated Healthcare Facility (Maple Creek) and Swift Current long term care replacement was noted. Cypress Health was also commended for its proactive decision to access external support to begin Hoshin Kanri training across the organization. Other important positives were the region’s partnerships with community stakeholders, the overall delivery of health services, and gains made in primary healthcare.

Chief Executive Officer Beth Vachon was extremely pleased with the results of the accreditation survey process.

“We are very proud of our staff’s efforts in achieving a 95 per cent compliance rating against the national standards that have been determined for the attainment of health care excellence,” stated Vachon. “The commitment of all 1,700 staff and physician team members that comprise Cypress Health has once again proven that we are dedicated to being leaders in health care, not only within our province but across the nation.”

While the survey results were very rewarding, the region is also able to use the accreditation process to improve its processes by learning from other health authorities throughout the country. The report acknowledged that enhanced horizontal integration of policies, procedures, and practice standards as well as increased focus on quality and patient and family engagement would be of benefit. It was also suggested that references of evidence to support the region’s well-developed policies may be considered.

As part of its next steps, Cypress Health will review the full report, address the recommendations for improvement and submit a follow-up report by early March 2014. If the region can prove its compliance with each suggested improvement by this date they will receive an upgraded status from ‘accreditation with report’ to ‘accreditation with commendation’. The region will make every effort possible to achieve this by its March 2014 deadline.
