Liberal candidate remains determined despite sudden passing of campaign manager

TRURO - Just a day after learning of the sudden passing of his campaign manager, Cumberland-Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley's Liberal candidate remains determined not to allow it to affect his campaign.

"We're moving forward. We had the good fortune of having Doug's support and guidance over the last five months and our strategy and game plan is well in place. Now it's a matter of having the operations people deliver," Jim Burrows said Tuesday.

Douglas A. Caldwell Q.C. passed away suddenly on Sunday at his home. He was 69.

Burrows, who first ran for the Liberals in the 2009 federal byelection that saw Conservative Scott Armstrong replace retiring Independent Bill Casey as MP, said he was shocked and deeply saddened when he first learned of Caldwell's death early Monday.

He considers Caldwell a good friend and a mentor and someone who has worked very hard in recent months to prepare the party for the campaign.

"It has certainly sent shockwaves through the party and the legal community," Burrows said.

"Our focus is on the strategy that we have place. We'll be moving some people around to make sure we have the operational capacity to do what Doug was doing, which was a lot. The key part, though, is that a lot of the background work was already done and he had us in good shape."

Burrows is not sure who will replace Caldwell as campaign manager, adding he's letting people step up with their responsibilities and picking up a few loose ends as they arise.

He admitted it's a tough way to start an election campaign, but said it's up to the party to continue forward over the next month to election day.

"It's definitely going to hurt us early on but it's not going to cripple the campaign in any way. It has taken some of my time away from the campaign trail," said Burrows.

Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
