CHARLOTTETOWN - The Prince Edward Island Seafood Producers Association is getting $2.2 million to spend on new processing technology and product development for lobster.
Ottawa, the provincial government and the Prince Edward Island Atlantic Shrimp Corp. are all contributing.
The federal portion, $1.6 million, is coming from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.
Federal Fisheries Minister Gail Shea says Ottawa will continue to support projects that provide long-term solutions to challenges caused by the global economic downturn.
The association will work with the Food Technology Centre and Holland College over the next year to develop four to six new products that they hope will benefit the entire lobster industry.
