HAMILTON, Ont. - Police say a 4 1/2-month-old boy escaped serious injury after being slammed against a wall as a man attacked and sexually assaulted his mother.
A 29-year-old Hamilton man, a relative of the mother and her child, has been charged with aggravated assault, sexual assault with a weapon and three counts of threatening death.
The man was arrested at the home without incident.
The little boy was kept overnight at McMaster Children's Hospital following the Monday afternoon attack.
His injuries have been determined to be minor and non-life threatening.
"He's going to make a full recovery, said Sgt. Terri-Lynn Collings, adding the mother, a woman in her 20s, was also taken to hospital but was not seriously injured.
The child's grandmother, who also lives in the home, was not injured.
Collings said the incident began in a home on Monday afternoon when a man armed with a knife got involved in a family argument at the home.
During the argument, the baby boy was yanked from his mother's arms and struck the wall head-first.
The mother was then sexually assaulted.
Police said the young woman was able to escape and ran to a neighbour's home to call 911.
Investigators determined there were threats to kill the baby, the woman and the grandmother.
The incident is still under investigation.
