TRURO - Lawn-mowing duties at Stewiacke River Park are to be done by Colchester County staff this summer instead of by employees at the Brookfield sportsplex.
The $17,000 to be saved by the decision, taken by council committee Thursday night, is to be used to create a six-month term position to add to the county's maintenance staff.
"The term position would vary from position to position depending on what's going on," community development director Crawford MacPherson told council, regarding the fact that the person hired could be used on a number of jobs.
"What we've had success doing is creating a pool of talent within the public works," he said, adding that the county's maintenance crew would be able to handle the extra mowing responsibilities.
"We're trying to put together a team that will give us better value for our money," added CAO Dan MacDougall.
The county has had a long-standing agreement with the sportsplex regarding the lawn-mowing responsibilities at Stewiacke River Park. Some councillors expressed concern about the impact that would have on sportsplex staff but in the end, council decided the municipality would be better served to have those duties brought in house.
Council also accepted a staff recommendation to change the title of the Nelson Park manager in Tatamagouche to recreation site supervisor. That will enable the staff member currently holding that position to oversee improvements at all municipal parks.
