BAIE VERTE, N.L. - Investigators are probing the cause of a fire Wednesday that robbed a community in Newfoundland and Labrador of all its firefighting equipment.
A passerby noticed the blaze at the Baie Verte fire hall around 7:30 p.m.
Mayor Gerald Acreman urged local residents to be extra careful with their fireplace or wood stove for the time being.
"Whatever they can do to be fire safe - and more so than normal," said Acreman. "As of this point in time we've lost everything that we had - everything.
"It'll take time to get something in place to replace this."
The building also housed the fire department's paging and communications equipment.
A number of homes around the fire hall were evacuated while firefighters tried to battle the blaze, but people were allowed to return home later.
Another fire in November destroyed the volunteer fire department's "smokehouse," a wooden structure used to train firefighters in how to navigate smoke-filled buildings.
