HALIFAX - A Halifax-area man has been charged with second-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of a man at a New Year's party in Antigonish.
Court documents filed Monday indicate Robert Harris Lamb, 20, of Dartmouth is accused of killing Jon Beaton, 25, of Southside Antigonish Harbour.
Beaton died in hospital early on New Year's Day, about four hours after police were called to a raucous disturbance at a house after midnight.
Lamb has not been arrested and a hearing in Antigonish provincial court Monday failed to produce a warrant for him. The matter was recessed until Tuesday after the Crown requested a publication ban on the information contained in the arrest warrant.
Judge John Embree will determine if the contents of the warrant can be made public.
Police don't actually need a warrant to arrest Lamb as he is already wanted on at least five other warrants for obstructing police, breaching release conditions and failing to attend court.
Cpl. M.J. DeLuco, provincial spokeswoman for the RCMP, said Lamb has been a person of interest in the case for some time.
"We've now developed sufficient grounds to proceed with the charge," she said.
Five people, including Beaton, were rushed to hospital after a brawl broke out at the party.
Lamb is the fourth person charged. Police first charged Christopher David Fordham, 19, of Antigonish with attempted murder, aggravated assault and two counts of assault causing bodily harm. Police have said those charges are not related to Beaton's stabbing.
Julian Frederick Chittick, 24, of Halifax was in court on Jan. 19 on five weapons charges and one each of assault with a weapon, uttering threats and breaching a court order. Those charges are also not related to Beaton's killing, police say.
An 18-year-old Dartmouth man will be in court March 31 on an assault charge.
