YARMOUTH, N.S. - The federal government has given $276,000 to the town of Yarmouth for improvements to its waterfront.
West Nova MP Greg Kerr announced the funding Wednesday and outlined some of the improvements the federal money will buy.
A canopy for a performing arts stage will be erected, murals painted on walls, and landscaping done.
Kerr, a Conservative MP, later met with civic leaders and business people to discuss the ferry situation.
Bay Ferries Ltd. announced just a week before Christmas that it would not resume its high-speed ferry service between Yarmouth and Maine in 2010.
The Cat ferry has been running from May through October in recent years and Kerr said they must ensure there's a long-term ferry service for the area.
Bay Ferries president Mark MacDonald has said the provincial government had told the company that financial assistance would not be extended this year.
Many people in southwestern Nova Scotia are worried that the absence of a ferry connection with the United States will prove disastrous to the summertime economy.
They want an assurance that some kind of ferry service will operate this year.
"We're doing everything we can to make that happen," Kerr said. "We can't afford to simply let it slide away, that's for sure."

It makes you wonder how the government can condone spending 250000 a year to rubn signs for the cobequid pass but cannot warrent spending money on communities that are booming like Yarmouth. Yarmouth is a beautiful place and many people from cananda and the states visit here but with no ferry service this will cut down on tourism. I understand that there needs to be measures put in place for people to be safe on the roads but if they can afford to put in signs on a highway that we as Canadains lease from the states...thats right we do not own the highway then why can they not put more money into something that hepls a community and brings in money for us as Nova Scotians!?!? It does not make sence...I think that the government needs to get there priorities strait!
