ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - The minimum wage in Newfoundland and Labrador will increase by 50 cents to $9.50 an hour on Jan 1.
The government has committed to raising it to $10 per hour by July.
Labour Minister Susan Sullivan says she is confident the increases will allow the province to offer an attractive and competitive work environment.
Increasing earned incomes is one of the goals of the government's poverty reduction strategy.
Sullivan recently released a progress report that suggests Newfoundland and Labrador has moved from having one of the highest levels of poverty in Canada to the third lowest.
