AMHERST - Mark Austin will represent New Democrats in the upcoming federal byelection for Cumberland-Colchester-Mus-quodoboit Valley.
The Old Barns resident has family roots in Cumberland County in that his grandfather was a Springhill coal miner.

Prisoner found dead
SPRINGHILL - A prisoner has been found dead in his cell at the Springhill Institution.

The cause of death hasn't been determined but the Correctional Service of Canada says foul play isn't suspected at this time.
All schools standing on guard
AMHERST - Students at Amherst Regional High School are now standing on guard for thee.
As part of a newly adopted bylaw by the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board, all schools in the district now begin the morning with the playing of "O Canada."
Most schools in the county have always played the national anthem in the morning, but it wasn't part of the schedule at many high schools until the board passed the bylaw in response to a request from the provincial government.
Eastrock willing to meet
CALGARY - The president of Calgary-based Eastrock Resources Ltd. said he is committed to working with local stakeholders before proceeding with further seismic testing in the sensitive Chignecto Game Sanctuary.
Michael Volcko said the sanctuary represents between 10-15 per cent of its Cumberland block, meaning there's a lot of other territory to assess.
