N.L. man who tried to throw drugs over jail wall gets prison term

ST. JOHNS, N.L. A Newfoundland man who tried to throw drugs over the wall from outside Her Majestys Penitentiary in St. Johns and later tried to escape custody has been sentenced to three years in prison.

Rex Allan Rideout of St. Johns pleaded guilty to eight charges including possessing drugs for the purpose of trafficking, trafficking, and escaping lawful custody.

The charges stem from three incidents.

Last year, Rideout was arrested after he was seen trying to throw a bag of OxyContin over the wall from outside the jail.

On Oct. 31 this year, police found the 30-year-old with drugs including 46 grams of cocaine and small amount of marijuana.

On Nov. 3, Rideout tried to escape custody after he was taken to hospital by two correctional officers from the penitentiary.
