SYDNEY, N.S. A Cape Breton man working as a cocaine courier has been sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison.

Christopher Aaron MacNeil, 35, of Kempt Head Road was carrying two kilograms of pure cocaine in his truck when he was arrested by Cape Breton Regional Police in May.

Crown prosecutor David Iannetti said today that couriers play a key role in the drug trade by insulating dealers from police.

Defence lawyer Joseph Rizzetto told the court that MacNeil carried the cocaine because he was in dire financial straits and needed the money to pay for the necessities of life.

MacNeil wasn't forced to sell cocaine to pay for the necessities of life, he could have delivered pizza.
