ST. JOHNS, N.L. A prison inmate in Newfoundland who allegedly stabbed another inmate in the eye with a homemade weapon is facing charges.

Adam Nugent appeared in provincial court in St. Johns this morning.

The 27-year-old is charged with assault with a weapon and uttering threats.

The stabbing took place last week at Her Majestys Penitentiary in St. Johns.

On Aug. 7, its alleged Nugent used a knife made from a pen to stab another inmate in the eye socket and other parts of his body.

Nugent was due to be released today after serving a 60-day sentence for a July 4 assault.

Instead, he was remanded into custody and is scheduled to return to provincial court Aug. 26.
