ST. JOHNS, N.L. The lawyer representing a Newfoundland doctor recently convicted of sex crimes says new fraud charges against his client should be dropped for lack of evidence.

Sean Buckingham was sentenced in January to more than seven years in prison for sexually assaulting patients and trafficking in prescription drugs.

He is now on trial in Newfoundland Supreme Court on charges that he defrauded the provinces Medical Care Program of nearly $64,000.

Lawyer Randy Piercey has made an application for a directed verdict on the charges.

It is alleged that between September 2002 and October 31, 2004, Buckingham made false claims involving 115 patients.

Justice Alphonsus Faour has adjourned proceedings until March 12.
