SPRINGHILL: Word that nearly 300,000 contraband cigarettes will be kept of the streets of Nova Scotia is welcome news, says Springhill Police Chief Gary Copeland.
"It cuts them down from coming here," Copeland said. "But we can't really say where it's coming from."
Contraband cigarettes have become an ongoing issue for all communities in the province, Copeland says, and the matter is consider just one of many ongoing investigations communities find their police forces contending with.
On February 3, around 288,000 cigarettes were found and seized after a 48 year-old North River, Colchester County, man fell asleep behind the wheel of a van and crashed along the highway near Oxford. Having such a case fall in your lap, Copeland says, doesn't fall into your lap everyday so community police departments have to stay diligent.
"Illegal cigarettes are always on our radar and whenever we feel we have the grounds charges will be laid," Copeland said.
On January 25, an estimated 50,000 illegal cigarettes we seized in the Amherst area and 11 people were arrested in relation to the seizures following an extensive investigation involving the Springhill and Amherst Police Street Crime Unit, Cumberland District RCMP, Cumberland RCMP Street Crime Unit and the Criminal Intelligence Service. Also seized was a quantity of marijuana, marijuana plants and a small amount of what was believed to be homemade liquor, also known as moonshine.
