WENTWORTH - The Conservative Party of Canada has stripped decision-making capabilities from the local Tory association's board of directors.

Don Plett, the national council's president, told the Monday News the council "will be suspending operations of the (Cumberland Colchester Musquodoboit Valley Conservative Association's) board ... but we are not disbanding the board."

What that means is current association board members will be allowed to remain on the board, but will not be permitted in decision-making. Instead, members of a newly created management committee will be responsible for decision-making.

"We will put the committee in place within days ... some of the (current) board members will be on the new management committee," said Plett.

Board members met with representatives from the national council in Wentworth last night. Most board members still support Bill Casey as their desired Conservative candidate for the next federal election even though the government said that will not happen.

"The board is standing strong. We were told by the national council that any member who doesn't support a Conservative candidate other than Bill Casey should resign from the board," Scott Armstrong, president of the local association riding. "Most of us wouldn't do that. We've done nothing wrong; why should we resign? We're taking it to the general membership to decide."

Two people did resign from the board.

The board suggested setting up an annual general meeting for the end of November, at which time a new board of directors would be voted in. Some of the new members could be current members re-voted in. Plett said the AGM will take place, but the council will decide when.

No board members would comment on the situation last night.
