Four towns take aim at Cumberland over services

AMHERST - Cumberland County's four towns feel it's time for the county to begin paying its fair share for town-based services.

The Amherst, Oxford, Springhill and Parrsboro councils have directed their chief administrative officers and senior staff to begin negotiations with the county for the provision of fire services in areas of the county not covered by a rural fire department and for the use by county residents of arenas in three of the four towns. The arena in Parrsboro is not municipally-owned.

"The councils believe that this collective approach is the best use of their limited resources toward providing similar services in similar situations," the four towns said in a joint release. "The towns simply want to ensure that the Municipality of the County of Cumberland pays its fair share of the very real costs of providing services to its residents who live in areas adjacent to the town."

Amherst town manager Greg Herrett said the four towns have been meeting privately since mid-summer to discuss areas of common interest and found that fire services and use of the arenas in the towns were the areas they wanted to talk to the county about.

While he understands the county may view the towns' approach as confrontational, Herrett said, the towns want to make the county a partner in providing services to county residents.

"We want to ensure the county is paying its fair share for services we're providing to their residents," he said. "We want to talk about being partners in providing services. We don't view it as being confrontational. We're all in similar circumstances and we're all providing similar services to the same unit. It makes sense for us to make a common approach and get some equity."
