HALIFAX - Halifax Regional Municipalitys identity crisis will be front and center at council this week. A proposed motion would drop the Regional Municipality part of our moniker, and have us just be called Halifax.

HALIFAX - Halifax Regional Municipalitys identity crisis will be front and center at council this week. A proposed motion would drop the Regional Municipality part of our moniker, and have us just be called Halifax.

The full HRM name was originally intended as a temporary name. At the time of amalgamation, the Municipal Government Act gave council the power to pick a name for the new super-city.

But they never did, and the temporary name seemed to become permanent. Now Lower Sackville Coun. Bob Harvey has put forth a motion to change the name to Halifax, once and for all.

Dartmouth Centre Coun. Gloria McCluskey is one councillor dead set against the name change. She said its ridiculous to label people as far away as Ecum Secum as Halifax.

We dont live in Halifax. And I think thats very undemocratic to force that on us, she said. Lets ask the people. Ask the residents. Give them an opportunity to let them say whether they want to be called something else.

She said the cost of the change alone would make it a bad idea, but more important, she doesnt believe residents outside of Halifax want to be given that name. She said the motion is yet another infuriating side effect of amalgamation.

I didnt believe in people being pushed into amalgamation. It hasnt worked, it doesnt work. But we were pushed into it, so here we are.

On the other side of the fence is Cole Harbour Coun. Harry McInroy.

He said its actually kind of embarrassing when he goes to different conferences and his nametag says: Harry McInroy, Halifax Regional Municipality.

Its awkward and personally, I dont use it, McInroy said.

He said the city was amalgamated over 10 years ago and its time for everyone to move forward and accept the fact that Halifax is really the heart of HRM and everyone could be recognized by the Halifax name.

I just think its the right thing to do and its time to get on with it, he said.

An additional embarrassment to McInroy is that hes started hearing people refer to HRM as Herm, something hed prefer to avoid.
