(TM) - An Amherst man has been sentenced to four years in prison for raping a 12-year-old girl at knifepoint in 2004.

Lealand Rupert Strong, 25, was convicted of sexual assault which included full sexual intercourse with the young girl, during which he threatened her with the knife.

Justice J.E. Scanlan handed down the mans sentence in a written decision last week.

You do not go around having sexual intercourse with 12-year-old children, and have a knife with you just to make sure it happens, she said.

According to the decision, Strong claimed he didnt know her age at the time of the assault and made excuses for the knife.

I am satisfied the knife was there for one purpose and one purpose only, Scanlan states in the report.

And that was to make sure this 12-year-old child did what he wanted.

The decision report states Lealand knew the girl and took advantage of a situation he shouldnt have.

Lealand is required to give a DNA sample, he is prohibited from being near anyone under the age of 14 for the next 15 years and will be registered with the Sexual Offence Reigstry for 20 years.
