Two people killed in weekend crash

EAST AMHERST - Two Amherst men in their early 20s are dead following an early morning crash on Sunday.

RCMP say the single-vehicle rollover occurred at 3:30 a.m. just east of Amherst on the Tyndal Road. Police say the two deceased were not wearing seatbelts and were ejected from the vehicle. The driver was treated and released from the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre with minor injuries while two other occupants were uninjured.

''It's still under investigation as to what the specific cause was...It was clear weather and dry roads,'' Cpl. Sharon Sisson said, adding the outcome may have been different had the victims been buckled up.

The crash occurred on a straight stretch of road. It's believed the driver went onto the shoulder and lost control, rolling the vehicle several times before it came to rest.

The crash occurred near Bernie Keizer's residence and while he didn't hear the accident he was awoken soon after by someone banging on the door to his house.

"Is was about 4 a.m. when someone was frantically knocking on the door asking for help. I looked out the bedroom window and knew something was wrong," Keizer said, adding that when he went outside he saw two bodies lying beside each other on the road. "I knew they were gone. It's really sad and not something you want to see."

The Mounties say the names of the deceased will be released today, pending notification of the family.

I heard the news dinner time Sunday about this tragedy. It is very saddening to hear the death of 2 friends you've graduated with; especially how easily it could of been avoided.
