CUMBERLAND COUNTY - The Cumberland County municipality will consider the Town of Oxford's request to find a way to help fund its fire department.

CUMBERLAND COUNTY - The Cumberland County municipality will consider the Town of Oxford's request to find a way to help fund its fire department.

At the county's monthly meeting yesterday, county CAO Rennie Bugsley announced the county is willing to start negotiations now on a deal that would see the county somehow aid the Oxford Fire Department's operational costs.

"We will respect the request that a meeting be set up in the very near future to begin the process. It is our desire to have the agreement in place long before July of next year," Bugsley said. "I trust we'll be able to reach an agreement for our mutual benefit."

That's good news for Oxford mayor Lloyd Jenkins.

"When we made the motion at council, we wanted to begin negotiations right away. I'm glad to hear that's what they want to do too," he said.

The next step in this process is for the two sides to come together for a meeting. No arrangements have been made as of yet.

Jenkins said he just wants to come a deal that's even for both parties. He wouldn't name what his side feels is appropriate.

"We're hoping to get an agreement so we know where we stand with the county and they with us," he said. "We just want a fair funding arrangement. The majority of our calls are in the county."
