PORT GREVILLE - At least one Cumberland County Museum may find things a little more difficult after it's application for a summer student was turned down by the federal government.

Ohra Collins, who operates the Age of Sail Heritage Centre, said the museum only received a provincial grant this summer with its federal application denied because there aren't any visible minorities in the community.

"We didn't score high enough because we didn't put on our form that we would specifically hire immigrants, aboriginals or homeless people. Really, where am I going to find someone who is a visible minority or homeless in Port Greville?" Collins said Friday. "The reason we didn't say we'd hire a visible minority is because we don't have any."

The centre, that celebrates the shipbuilding heritage along the Fundy Shore from Advocate to Parrsboro, will be opening in a couple of weeks. Without the federal grant, Collins will have to find a way to either hire someone on their own or go without.

"If the situation doesn't not change it will put us about $3,000 in debt to hire someone so we have sufficient staff. We would have to take it out of our capital fund, which goes towards things like repairs and painting," Collins said. "Or we could simply go short staffed."

Collins was contacted by Cumberland Colchester Musquodoboit Valley MP Bill Casey and she's hoping something can be done to fix things.

"I know our MP is getting a lot of flack for something he didn't do and I know he's working hard to try and change this as much as he can," Collins said. "We got the letter the other day and I got a call from him yesterday saying he'll do what he can.

"Bureaucrats are the ones messing it up and I think it's time they get raked over the coals instead of the people who are trying to represent us," she added.
