Two families homeless after Sunday night fire

AMHERST Two families are homeless today after fire gutted a four-unit downtown apartment building here last night.

Onlookers are crediting passerby Mike Fullerton as a hero after he reportedly kicked in a door and pulled building owner Brian Keefe to safety. Keefe was treated and released from hospital for smoke inhalation.

Monday, as investigators combed thorough the remains of the building owned by Keefe and his common-law spouse, Christine Boudreau, Keefe said both families lost almost everything.

I just came out from our side now, he said. There was no fire there but they poured water on the house for five hours so you can imagine what its like in there. The water is halfway to my knees. Its like its raining.

The dripping water could be heard outside the home.

Deputy fire marshal Bob Orr said the fire is believed to have started in a ground-floor apartment currently being renovated following a March 31 fire in the same unit.
