Eleven-year-old holds bake/yard sale for Red Cross

AMHERST – Summer was not all about relaxing for Rachael Liddell.
The 11-year-old put her spare time to use with a fundraiser she put together herself for the local Red Cross. The idea came to her while she was spending time at her family cottage in Port Howe.

Eleven-year-old Rachael Liddell raised $118.80 for the local Red Cross from a bake sale and yard sale held at her cottage in Port Howe on Aug. 30.

“I was just sitting there on the beach, and I just got the idea, thinking Why not raise some money?” she recalled.

Wanting to help children, she first thought of supporting the IWK children’s hospital in Halifax, but then changed her mind, deciding it might be easier to give money to a cause more local. She settled on the Red Cross, where her father, Mike Liddell, has been a volunteer as part of the disaster management team for the past five years. Her grandmother, Janet Arsenault, also volunteers there.

Rachael held a combined bake sale and yard sale at the cottage on Aug. 30, raising $118.80 for the cause.

“I did the baking myself, with help from my mom and my friend Isabella from Dartmouth,” she explained.

Rachael receives encouragement from her family to volunteer, but the initiative is all her own, according to her father.

“Rachael knows the Red Cross helps people in need, and she wants to give back,” said Liddell. “She’s been a volunteer for awhile. She’s helped out with the Christmas parade and other events, like the door-to-door campaign.”

Every little bit helps, according to Angie Lohnes, service centre co-ordinator, who said the fund would be used for local initiatives such as helping families affected by house fires, or training for volunteers.

“All our programs depend on donations,” said Lohnes. “It helps us be able to provide the services we do. We had volunteers out responding to a house fire last night, and this goes hand in hand. It’s very important.”

Volunteers are always welcome at the Red Cross. For more information contact Lohnes at 667-8795, angela.lohne@redcross.ca, or drop in to the office at 16 Church Street.
