Woman killed in car crash on Highway 125 in Sydney

SYDNEY — A 59-year-old British Columbia woman is dead following a single vehicle crash on Highway 125 in Sydney on Monday.

Witnesses say that at approximately 5 a.m. a vehicle travelling eastbound left the highway and flipped. The woman, from Surrey, B.C, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was a passenger in the vehicle.

There were three people in the vehicle at the time of the crash. The conditions of the driver and the other passenger are not immediately known.

Cape Breton RCMP Traffic Services officers were being assisted on scene by the Cape Breton Regional Police, EHS, fire and Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal staff.

Highway 125 at exit 8 was temporarily closed and traffic was being diverted to exit 8 and to exit 9 at Grand Lake Road while police investigated and the scene was cleared. As of 9 a.m. that section of highway had been reopened to traffic.
